Creating strategic content foundations for Global WitnessWhat needed doing
Global Witness had some great content but their website had been added to organically over time and was structured around internal ways of thinking. In the light of imminent brand and website projects they wanted clarity about what was working well and where there was room for improvement.
What we did to start with
We conducted a content audit and health check on 4,221 web pages and reported on our findings as well as giving recommendations for a transformational change to the way they approach content. We highlighted six especially significant content challenges we uncovered.
What we did next
Following on from our strategic report we created an information architecture to make sure that content is labelled and organised in a consistent, user-centred effective way. We ran a workshop to check our thinking and principles and presented the architecture in abstract form as well as suggesting ways it can be implemented in navigation and design.
We carried out content modelling to provide solid underpinnings for a new website and for a long-term sustainable, user-centred content future. We reduced the number of content types and built and documented a modular content model. We emphasised the strategic aspects as much as the structural, helping Global Witness be more mission-focused and user-centred too.
We also created a multi-language decision-making framework and an archiving policy to help with content decisions that the organisation will have to make.
We also made a content plan and created content guidance. For the content plan we used Coda, an online platform that allows each piece of content to be moved along an efficient path by the right people at the right time. Where there was a one-to-one relationship with existing content we linked each piece of content in the plan to data and findings from the audit. We included a dynamic dashboard showing content progress using easy-to understand graphs.

Global Witness have all the foundational pieces they need, not just for an improved new website but for their content work for years to come.
